CCMA Announces the Rescission of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Induction

Toronto, ON (March 10, 2025) – The Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA®) and its Board of Directors are devoted to upholding the integrity of the CCMA Awards and Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame (CCMHOF) by ensuring that all nominees and inductees meet the established eligibility criteria.

The CCMHOF recognizes Canadian artists and builders who have made long-term contributions to Canadian country music. Inductees are selected annually by their Canadian industry peers, and the Hall of Fame is overseen by the CCMA Board of Directors’ appointed Hall of Fame Management Committee.

The CCMHOF eligibility criteria requires inductees to be Canadian citizens or have landed immigrant status. Following a review process that included consultations with internal and external committees and partners and considering Buffy Sainte-Marie’s confirmation that she is not a Canadian citizen; the CCMA has revoked her 2009 induction as she no longer meets the eligibility requirement.

The CCMA remains committed to celebrating and supporting Canadian country artists while maintaining the integrity of its awards and recognition processes. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and diverse musical landscape, ensuring that Canadian country music continues to reflect the voices and stories of our nation.
